​Stages of work

Archaeology and built heritage are now seen as an important consideration within the planning process. It is critical that archaeology be considered early in any planning application, to minimise delay and expenditure. A programme of work is followed, depending on the results of each stage.

Desk Based assessment carried out prior to or early on in the development: determines whether intrusive archaeological investigation is required

Evaluation: the results of this usually determine whether an excavation is required

Watching Brief –before, during or after the main phases of work, or a stand-alone project
Picture
Excavation – usually the most detailed and thorough level of archaeological investigation
