Features & book reviews
Features are short articles that are often turned around very quickly in order to provide a timely look at a newsworthy or current topic, or to give insight into archaeologists and aspects of archaeology in London. They are often either commissioned or written by the Features Editor, but it’s sometimes possible to take short contributed articles.
We usually publish features under the heading of one of our irregular series, which include:
Book reviews
All sorts of people involved in archaeology review books for us. Reviewers may be assigned at a quarterly committee meeting or suggested by other sources. All reviews are submitted to the features editor according to the guidelines set out in the Notes for Reviewers. Contact Feature Editor here.

- Just the job – interviews with people holding non-standard, less familiar jobs
- Author, author… – a profile of the winner of biennial publication prize, probing both writer and writing
- In context – two people with different perspectives face same questions
- Significant site – profile of a notable archaeologist based around their choice of London site
- Site/project/excavation update – news on current or recently finished sites or projects
- Exhibition preview / review – a look at an exhibition relevant to archaeology
- Museum visit – review of new museum or gallery
- Access to archaeology – projects and ventures that bring archaeology to wider public, such as excavations or community archaeology initiatives
- Report preview – key findings from a report / monograph due to be published in coming quarter
- Findspot – a find, or group of finds (artefacts and ecofacts), that merit a more detailed look
