This year's Annual Lecture and AGM will be held online on Thursday 19 May this year, as the Institute of Archaeology is still unavailable. The usual short AGM at 7.00 pm will be followed by the prestigious Annual Lecture. This year, Antonietta Lerz , Senior Archaeologist with MOLA, will be speaking about:

'From riches to rags: 2,000 years of settlement at Landmark Court, Southwark’.

The current excavations were only completed at the end of 2021 so this lecture will look at both the recent excavation and the previous excavations on the site.

The AGM proceedings will include the election of Officers, plus six ordinary members to the Publication Committee. We have a complete slate of Officers, and three ordinary members, who are happy to stand for re-election. So there are three vacant places for ordinary members.
The short AGM will commence at 7pm, followed by the Annual Lecture.

]]><![CDATA[Increase in subscription rates]]>Wed, 27 Apr 2022 10:08:35 GMThttps://www.londonarchaeologist.org.uk/news/increase-in-subscription-ratesBack in the summer of 2004, the old, small-format London Archaeologist (Vol 10 (9)) informed us about a Jesuit cemetery in Roehampton, an evaluation on the Little Rose Estate, many ‘bird-pots' - and a decision to raise the subscription rates. The committee hoped that the new rates would hold for four years!

Now, 18 years on, we are raising the rates again - so the cover price of the Summer 2022 issue (Vol 16 (9)) will be £5.95. The UK subscription will be £22 (with a special rate of £18 for Under-25s in the UK).

The subscription for those in Europe will become £30, and £40 for rest of the world. Sadly, our increasing costs, particularly postal rates, are impossible to ignore.

As a charity, we need to ensure the magazine covers its costs and has the capacity to develop. The Covid 'interlude' made it difficult to consider a rise in the last two years for operational reasons, but we hope you have appreciated the fantastic good value that LA has become. Your enthusiasm and interest for over 50 years has been our driving force and we trust in your continued support.
]]><![CDATA[Nominations now open for the London Archaeological Prize 2022]]>Wed, 30 Mar 2022 20:19:05 GMThttps://www.londonarchaeologist.org.uk/news/nominations-now-open-for-the-london-archaeological-prize-2022Since its inception in 2004, this biennial publication prize has aimed to promote the highest standards in writing about London’s archaeology.

If you’ve read – or written – a great piece of work over the past two years, why not enter it for this prestigious award?

£250 cash prize and award certificate will be given to the best publication of 2020 and 2021. A second prize of £100, plus certificate, will also be awarded if enough entries of a high standard are received.

The prize committee would particularly like to encourage entries demonstrating innovative approaches and ground-breaking formats:

Any printed or digital publication related to London is eligible;
Anyone can make a nomination: author, publisher or appreciative reader;
Past entries have included monographs, popular books and booklets, peer-reviewed papers, shorter articles and blogs;
Potential audiences have included professional and amateur archaeologists, academics, children and the general public.
Winning authors have come from a wide range of backgrounds

The winning entry, selected by a panel of judges appointed by London Archaeologist, will achieve its stated aims and deliver quality and excellence to its intended readers

Nominations must be received by Wednesday 25th May 2022.

We're pleased to announce that all issues of London Archaeologist up to and including Vol.15, No. 9 (Summer 2019) and Supplement 2 are now available free online in the Archaeology Data Service Library. This means that all the issues with London Archaeologist @50 Special Reviews are now available.

London Archaeologist's Annual Lecture and General Meeting will be online this year, with the AGM at 7pm, followed by the Annual Lecture.

For this year's Annual Lecture, Stephanie Ostrich will present

Making heritage work for communities: Walworth Heritage Action Zone: heritage-led regeneration and community engagement in one of London’s historic high streets.

Heritage Action Zones (HAZs) have been rolled out in four phases over the last few years: the first Greater London HAZ was Sutton in Round 1; the first inner London one was Walworth as part of Round 2. This is a particularly fitting subject where Covid has taken its toll on all the country's high streets.

Stephanie Ostrich specialises in public heritage and archaeology and supporting community-led research. Originally from across the pond, she has worked in British archaeology for 13 years. She has managed several community heritage projects including award-winning community archaeology and volunteer programme CITiZAN (the Coastal and Intertidal Zone Archaeological Network), the Temple of Mithras oral history project, and since 2019 has managed the Walworth Heritage Action Zone, a heritage-led regeneration and community initiative with Southwark Council, Historic England and our community partners.
